The National Arts in Education Week of Giving is just one of the many programs being planned to celebrate National Arts in Education Week in Indianapolis from September 11-17, 2016. Designated by Congress in 2010, through House Resolution 275, National Arts in Education Week is a national celebration that promotes and showcases the important role of the arts in education.

Interested in starting the celebration of arts in education a bit early? Start by visiting these organizations’ websites to find out what amazing school-based programs they already have. Find your favorite one and be an advocate by telling people about the great work they are doing in schools!

RECAP: Arts Integration Conference at the Kennedy Center, June 27-29

By Robin Houdek, arts educator

At the end of June, I attended The Kennedy Center’s Arts Integration Conference, Exploring an Approach to Teaching. It was by far one of the most inspiring and informative conferences I have ever attended. Before going, I didn’t know what to expect. What exactly is arts integration and how is different from arts as curriculum? Would it be useful for me in my classroom practice or was the purpose for me to bring back most of what I learned to share with colleagues?

Help bring equity to arts education!

join usDo you know anyone who might be interested in getting involved with the implementation of Any Given Child Indy in Indianapolis Public Schools?

We have already received responses from a number of people who expressed their interest in a committee, but several opportunities are still available!

We are looking for people with talents and expertise in a variety of areas, and all committee members should have a passion for bringing equity to arts education.

We have openings for participation in the following four committees:

  • Creative Engagement Committee, coordinates community engagement both online and face-to-face
  • Professional Development Committee, coordinates training for artists, arts organizations, and IPS teachers
  • Budget & Resources Committee, coordinates development of program budget and new funding
  • Evaluation & Assessment Committee, coordinates ongoing measurement of impact of programs and activities

If you would like to serve on one of the above committees, please email Taylor Fengya at with your name, organization, title, and committee of interest. Each committee will conduct their first meeting during National Arts in Education Week, September 11-17, 2016.

Please also share this opportunity with friends, family, and colleagues who would bring both passion and talent to the Any Given Child Indy team!

Voices for Any Given Child Indy: Theatrical Experiences Can Improve Reading Skills

Elise J. Kushigian, Community Arts Team Member & Community Member Former Executive Director of Clowes Memorial Hall

We soon realized that instead of reading books if she could read theatre scripts she was overcoming her disabilities. Thanks to her second grade teacher, permission was given for her outside reading list to be scripts. Each night, we all became characters and put on a “show.” To her, this was not reading but a theatrical experience.
